When your country tries to survive on an unstable commodity, you better do your part! Shamefully, we’re yet to see gas as cheap as in the US. Right now the pump was at 2.57 dollars a gallon

Hmm lines painted on the ground for direction to pull into pumps. What happens if there is someone in front of you? And that's assuming a 50/50 split for right/left hand filler nozzles. Order is good but this was built for a perfect world that doesn't exist.

But does it work?

What happens if there is someone in front of you?
-> the space between pumps is around 8 m, and gas here has to be pumped by an attendant, so motorists are always inside their cars and they can manouver.
That’s assuming a 50/50 split for right/left hand filler nozzles.
-> the hoses are pretty long, you can serve either side of the car on the station. I prefer not to because the hoses scratch my paint.
Order is good but this was built for a perfect world that doesn’t exist.
-> I maybe agree, the orientation makes sense because no one really wants to go down the street to the left in the drawing; it’s a small street that goes no where, so it has less traffic too; it makes more sense as an entrance than an exit. Plus, that way attendants can make sure the queue is enforced.

Hmmm are gas station attendants mandatory or is it just by choice? I don't think I've ever not pumped my own gas. Thank you for this detailed efficiency analysis.

It’s mandatory nationwide as far as I know, but some oppos that have visited the northernmost reaches of the country say that up there it’s not really enforced.

Crazy. Is there a reason other than job creation? I just don't see the point.

I never actually knew why, most times they’re informal workers (even if they have Pemex uniforms, gas stations are franchised to private businesses) and only make whatever you give them as a tip. I think the benefit is that attendants can dispatch gasoline very quickly, and Mexicans still mostly handle cash.

Probably because gasoline is a hazardous material. Can’t pump your own gas in NJ or OR. I have seen lots of people throughout my driving career smoking and looking at phones while pumping.

At the same time? That’s weak sauce compared to smoking, swigging whiskey out of the bottle, and holding a phone while on the interstate like I saw once.
But gas stations hardly ever blow up. Oh wait, that means they do occasionally, which is already too much.
